Introduction

Argentina at a glance

Argentina stretches from subtropical forest in the north to the ice fields of Patagonia, and the distances are vast. Domestic flights make it workable, and a well-planned route lets you combine Buenos Aires with Iguazú, Mendoza’s vineyards and the glaciers of the far south without feeling rushed.

Why visit

  • Patagonia’s glaciers and granite peaks, with comfortable lodges as a base.
  • Buenos Aires: café culture, architecture, tango and excellent dining.
  • The wine regions of Mendoza and Salta, at the foot of the Andes.
Signature experiences

Private moments in Argentina

  • A private estancia stay with horse riding and a traditional asado
  • Guided tastings with winemakers in the Uco Valley
  • A boat excursion on Lago Argentino to the glacier faces
  • A private tango lesson, followed by an evening at a milonga
Best time to visit

When to go, month by month

Patagonia is best from late October to early April, when the days are long; wind is a constant companion. Buenos Aires is most pleasant in spring (September to November) and autumn (March to May). Iguazú can be visited all year, and Mendoza’s harvest season runs roughly from February to April.

Good to know

  • Distances are large: Buenos Aires to El Calafate is around three hours by air.
  • Patagonian weather changes quickly, so layers and waterproofs are essential even in summer.
  • Check current entry requirements for your nationality before travelling.
FAQs

Argentina: your questions

Can I combine Argentina and Chile in one trip?

Yes. Torres del Paine in Chile is a few hours’ drive from El Calafate with a land border crossing, so the two countries pair naturally in Patagonia.

Which side of Iguazú Falls is better?

Both. Argentina offers more walking trails close to the water, while Brazil gives the wide panoramic view. Two nights lets you see each side unhurried.

How long should I spend in Patagonia?

Allow at least five or six nights for the glaciers and the Fitz Roy area, and more if you add Torres del Paine.
